Finally, it's finished! I think that it's really beautiful. Even though knitting the body was tedious and boring, but the result was well worth it. Now I have to pack it up and send it off to my mum for her birthday.

I went to do the photoshoot yesterday and took about 30 photos. They all turned out so great that it was hard to choose. So, I picked out a lot of them. Hope you like them.

I definitely loved this project, and can't wait to take post-blocking photos! I knew that once I'd gotten the chance to block this shawl, it would drastically different. However, I think I knew that on a purely intellectual level. Once I got Icarus all pinned out, I was quite shocked at the difference. (Just like I am every time I block lace! I really should remember how cool this process is!)

So Im ALOMOST done with this shawl...It was easy to knit but i swear when you get into that last chart it takes FOREVER! and stupid me thought it would look good with a xtra repeat...thi sthing is HUGE I think that repeat was a bad i dea now LOL thank god I didnt make it with the 4 extra ones I wanted LOL

I am so excited to be a part of this KAL! At the end of the summer, I got back in to knitting and Icarus was what got me back! It was part of a "get-back-to-the-real-me-post-break up" process of being single again. I had never done anything from a pattern, and certainly had never done lace. Now i'm hooked! I have really gotten in to knitting and even get paid to knit by a designer now! Please check out more on my blog, I would love some comments and ideas! So here is my Icarus so far. I have had to divide my attention among more projects lately, so progress has slowed, but I still am loving it. I am in the middle of the 3rd repeat. I am knitting with Kid Merino Crystal Palace Yarn Color:4670 Lot: E0065348. It is very nice to knit with, and I have had my share of mistakes. I actually had to start over after the first repeat because I made a mistake that just kept growing and growing. I have really gotten in to a rhythm and this has been a challenge but a GREAT learning process. Thank you, Miriam, for such a wonderful pattern. So here is my Icarus in a pale green.

Finished!

This must have been the longest shawl-in-progress...ever! All my own doing, of course. I started my Icarus, named Carmelita, a looong time ago. Last summer, to be exact. However, I put it down for nearly a year, and just started knitting again last month. So while this shawl was technically on the needles since last June, I would approximate the actual knitting time at around 4 months (still pretty pathetic, I know). You can read more about the history of this project on my blog. I'm so excited that I finally finished this shawl!

Even after I was done with the knitting, it was hard to picture what I had on my hands until blocking began. Blocking is fun!

This was an admittedly (and somewhat embarrassingly) frustrating process for at times, but I was determined to finish this shawl one day...even if it killed me. Now that all is said and done, I am able to look back on the journey with fondness and a great sense of accomplishment. I know it's just a little lace shawl, but it's a pretty big deal to me.

The end result is so rewarding. I love this shawl. Leftover proof of mistakes and all. I'll wear it with pride.

Hi there,
I'm late to the party -- between the time I e-mailed to say I'd like to join the KAL and the time I heard back and got around to signing in, I've actually finished my Icarus. But it's my first Knitalong ever so I hope it's okay for me to show you just the product and not the process. I've detailed the various stages of knitting this shawl on my blog if you'd like more evidence that I actually knit this myself. Here are the highlights though:

first, winding the Misti Alpaca 2 ply into balls, on July 12th. Someday, I hope someone who loves me will buy me a ballwinder and swift. I'm being pretty proactive about that hope, dropping lots of hints, pointing out where to buy them, what they're for, etc.

The next stage of Icarus really puzzled me. The only other lace shawl I've knit is Birch which starts with about 300 stitches and then decreases. Starting with so few, I assumed I was at the bottom point, but I couldn't understand where the lace would come in. Only gradually, I realized that these stitches were fanning out from an inverted "v" into the wide top of the shawl. And then when I was chatting about this with someone at my LYS, I found that this is really typical of Shetland shawls. So ingenious.

But after figuring out that puzzle, the excitement faded with all those hours and hours and hours of stocking stitch. What kept me going through this stage and stopped me from complaining too much was knowing that it's the simplicity of the stocking stitch that makes this shawl so beautiful to me -- the calmness of the body really sets off the busier "feathers" edging.

Finally, though, I got to the lacework -- challenging but not too difficult to keep track of, and I managed not to make any huge errors that would make me regret not using lifelines.

I finished late last week, September 7th, and then blocked the shawl outside in the sun where it dried in a day. I do wonder if I should have blocked it more aggressively -- I see more pronounced "feathers" on other shawls. Maybe next time, if/when I eventually have to wash it. Here it is blocking:

and even closer inAnd finally, here's the way I'm most likely to wear it. I realized with Birch that restricting it to summer wearing wasn't good enough and found that it folds into an attractive scarf, more than doubling its usefulness. I'm going to do the same with Icarus which is a bit smaller and won't need so much folding. It's too warm here to try it with a winter coat yet, but I think I'll wear it like this through the fall and really enjoy its lightweight comfort. Not the best shot, but not bad considering my left arm is stretching out to take the picture!
So! I've completed a very satisfying project and I've also joined in my first Knitalong. Thanks to the moderators for setting this up and thanks to all of you for providing me some guidance through your posts as I was knitting.

Hi everybody!

I've been in the KAL for quite a while now but never got around to posting anything. This is probably due to the fact that my Icarus had been in hibernation for a couple of months. I just picked it up again about three weeks ago and had been plugging away at it.

I'm still on the 3rd repeat of chart one....and it's growing slowly. I'm at about 310+ stitches on each row now...and it takes longer and longer to knit each row.

I switched needles from the 60 cm long Inox to the 80 cm long Addi Lace when I picked it up again...the gauge changed very slightly, but I think it will be okay after blocking.

And from the size it's getting, there's no way I'll be able to take a photo of it in my small light box the next time....we'll see. :-)

My Icarus is done! And it's lovely. It was such a great pattern to knit. (That it took so long is a testament to my project polygamy, not to the pattern itself.)

Cast on: January 2007.
Cast off: 21 August 2007.

Knit in KnitPicks Shadow, in the Oregon Coast colorway. Edges beaded with jade chips. I used a 3.25 mm circular bamboo needle (metric knitting needle sizes make more sense, so I'm trying to switch... but that's a US 3) of whatever length Miriam suggested in the pattern... I forget. (Note to self: use a pointier needle for lace next time.)

Woo-hoo - finished! Loved this pattern so much! [About a gazillion close-ups on my blog]

I did it in Handpaintedyarn.com's laceweight [Bombon and Sunshine] and got the colour change idea from Craftster. The colour choices are supposed to be; the frame and part of the feathers have already been burnt by the sun and are smouldering, whilst the [highly flammable] feather tips are actually on fire.

My only difficulties were with not using lifelines [duh!] and the varying ways of doing yarn overs depending on whether between knit stitches, knit & purl stitches etc.

I can't stop wearing this and am now officially addicted to lace knitting!

Hello All!
Well, I've gotten off my butt and decided to get back to knitting. I think I had some pretty good excuses (grad school, thesis...), but I'm happy to be back to it.

My Icarus, that I'm knitting out of the laceweight Misti Alpaca (sooo soft!!!!), is officially 20% done. Which means I'm still on the first chart and knitting endless, ever-increasing rows of stockinette. But, I will not be defeated! The fact that I can definitely see it growing is a good sign:

Here is my finished Icarus, knitted in Posh Yarn's cobweb weight cashmere/silk yarn Cecilia, color Memories.
I really love the feel of cobweb weight shawl. It's so airy and light!

For encouragement for those of you still knitting your Icaruses - it took over five months to finish this. I started this in late December, finished in May and was too lazy to block it until now. Blocking wires were great help.

Chart 4, how I love/hate thee!

The love should be obvious. It's such a pretty design, and the pattern is fun to work. Then again, the hate should be obvious, too.

It's so big! The rows go on FOREVER!!!

I'm trying to get at least a row done a day in the hopes of finishing this up soon. We shall see how well that works, since each row is a significant time commitment at this point. I am very much looking forward to adding beads to this sucker. I have them purchased and all ready to go, but am not going to show them off until they're actually ON the shawl.

Ok, so maybe I've let this Icarus thing get a little out of hand. In the last few days, my need to dispense with the first chart and move on to lucky number two has displaced sleep, and created a general aversion to anything that would potentially break my rhythm.

That said, I think it's starting to pay off since I'm down to about one and a half more repeats. What are your thoughts on the colour? Do you think that the slight pooling in spots will detract from the gorgeous simplicity of Miriam's design or am I just pooling paranoid?

Okay, I feel such a moron for asking this but here goes.

I have only just started Icarus and already hit a snag. I just cannot get the hang of the chart. I down loaded the pattern from Mim Knits, followed the written instuctions up to row 5 (Row 5 and I'm in trouble, good grief!) and about there everything goes wrong as by the time I get to row 8 I have 19 stitches.
Okay, that's what it says is the count on the written instructions. Time to get the chart out and the little squares number only 9, now I know that these represent either stitches or knitting operations as it were but even counting the decreases as a stitch each there are only eleven actual stitches represented on row one of the chart. I know I'm being dense but I know also that this is why I joined the KAL.

Update.

Thanks to Socherry and Nicole, I paused in my grand plan to break between charts one and two. Sometimes, just throwing an idea out there causes one to reflect a moment, and not dash off in a wild goose chase.

Icarus will be completed as written. This resource has saved me hours of grief, I'm sure of it.

Chart two is nearly complete, and I hope to post a photo in the next day or two.

Here is the current state of my Icarus shawl.

And a close-up of the pattern. I'm part-way through Chart #3, and loving it.

Please excuse the blurriness of the pics; I wanted to get a decent representation of the color, and so didn't use the flash.

I'm using Knitpicks Shadow in the Oregon Coast colorway. It's a great yarn to knit with, even though it's not a fancy expensive one. But it works very nicely for a first Major Lace Project. It is not very splitty, which is good, but even more importantly: it can stand up to a bit of ripping back while I try to fix mistakes.

I would love to be knitting this shawl in something silky or fuzzy or shimmery, but I think it's going to turn out lovely as is. Plus, this is a safer first-lace-yarn. So it was a perfect pick for me.

I finished my icarus! Except for the blocking. I had the most problems with making mistakes in rows one and two of the last four rows than anywhere else in the whole shawl. Go figure. I think I was so in the rhythm of following charts that I felt a little lost without them.

Pictures will come after blocking. Unfortunately, that may not be until next weekend. Going out of town this weekend and want to block it at my SO's grandma's house so I have enough room. Our 'guestroom' is really a storage room full of stuff. Plus, I don't trust my cat...

Here's my Icarus.

I'm about to begin chart two. I have enjoyed every stitch, because the pattern is stunning and the yarn was dyed especially for me.

I have exactly 800 meters, and I do think some will remain, but I want to use every last inch, if possible. My proposal is this: putting chart one aside, and using a provisional cast on, complete the remaining three charts, and then grafting the two together. That way, if (and that's a big if) I have more yarn, I can add extra repeats of chart one. Has anyone attempted to graft more than stockingette? I think it should be possible. However, it may break up the vertical line of the shawl, so I'm quite hesitant about this.

That said, I will use my new digital scale to determine the weight of my remaining yarn and calculate all the stitch requirements before I make my decision.

This knit-a-long is a fabulous resource! I had no idea such a thing existed. Thanks to all for participating.

Hello all, newbie here (and KAL virgin).

I've decided to make (or become obsessed with making- tough line to draw) Icarus out of some Hand Maiden Lace Silk in the Bronze colourway. I fell in love with the shawl when it first came out but never thought that I'd actually make it since I had sooooo many other projects on the go and I wasn't sure what I would do with a lace shawl. A quick trip to the Downtown Knit Collective's Knitter's Frolic here in Toronto, threw all of that calm rational thought out of the window and I found myself clutching these beauties:

A small apartment yarn acquisition rule I have: never buy yarn that has no purpose. Quickly racking my brain, I remembered Icarus and thought that it would be a beautiful pattern to set off the variegation in the yarn. Like magic, there was a copy of the Summer '06 Interweave next to me where I could check the yarn requirements. Needless to say that I was off.

I've been trying to get some projects off the needles before plunging into this one. After about two weeks, I couldn't wait anymore. Here's the little that I have so far.

I was reading an earlier post where someone was trying to use Handmaiden for her Icarus and it was pooling badly. Hopefully I won't have the same problem since, at this point, I love this yarn so much I could cry.

Hello everyone!

I've actually been working on my Icarus shawl for some time now, but never thought to look for a KAL. I'm well into the second chart, and love the pattern.

I'm using Knitpicks' Shadow for my shawl, and don't have any current progress pictures, but if you go to my blog I have some old-ish pictures up.

I plan on adding beads to the edging of the shawl. Miriam posted instructions on how to do it, since there wasn't room in the Interweave Knits column for it. Has anyone else tried it? How did the beading turn out, if so?

Anyway, that's my introductory post, and I'll try to take current progress pictures soon. Cheers!

I know I haven't posted here very frequently, especially since my first post was when I started the shawl back in March. I finished it this weekend. I used Claudia Handpaint Silk in the Plumicious color. For most I used my Knitpicks Options needles, but between Chart 3 and 4, my Addi Lace needles arrived and I switched to them.

I love this shawl.

I say this is utter madness because I don't knit! So, after the dizziness passed off, the next thing I did was to sign up here for all the help, support and motivation I can get and I haven't even recieved the Icarus kit yet.

Hi Everyone!

After almost exactly 2 weeks of work I'm on the 4th of 5th repeat of Chart One (I'm going to do two more repeats after this one, so I'm not particularly fussed over keeping close track) and so far really - surprisingly! - enjoy the easy, almost mindlessness, progress of the pattern so far.

(I guess after knitting Birch as my very first lacy shawl project - done in just 3 rapid weeks! - I'm a bit casual about my future shawl projects...........which are probably [in]famous last words, huh?)

I'm using the pattern-recommended wool-silk yarn - - Jaegerspun Zephyr in a quite lovely shade called 'Aegean Blue'. The shawl is a gift for my most dearest Grammy Jane (my maternal grandmother) and as my toddler son and I will be visiting her over Memorial Day, I still - happily - have loads of time to finish it.

My only real question, so far, for the group is about the recommended needles. I'm using Addi Naturas (love that bamboo!!!) in a size 3 - - but keep holding up the whole thing and wondering over and over and over again if a 24" needle is really going to be long enough to comfortably hold the entire shawl once I get to those last, mammoth, stitch-packed rows???

I'm working Icarus from some divine Claudia Handpaint Silk in the Just Plum colorway. This photo is a little old as I'm now close to finishing the fourth repeat. I love the pattern and I think it is just perfect for this yarn.

I had to frog my Icarus-in-progress. This particular yarn just wasn't working properly, & the shape was more of a diamond than a triangle. I still plan to do Icarus someday, just in a different yarn from the one that I was using.

New joiner here.

I just cast on for Icarus on Groundhog Day. I managed to get to row 27 of chart one before i found a few errors and ripped the whole thing. Since then, i cast on again and am on row 15 of chart one now. That's it so far, but i plan to work on it tonight. I'll post a pic next time.

Did anyone decide to go with a different needle size? I'm going to read backward to see.

I made lots of progress this weekend - though the shawl looks very similar to the last pictures! I'm on the 4th repeat of chart one. I like the rhythm of chart one, though I'm surprised that I like the pattern rows so much better than the purl rows - I thought I'd find the pattern rows more stressful and enjoy the rest row more. I'm glad I've seen all the pre and post blocking pictures on the KAL because it looks kind of scrunchy and poopy - not very beautiful right now!

Hi everyone! I am so inspired by all the beautiful Icarus shawls - it's a gorgeous pattern. I started an Icarus on my recent vacation and so far I really like working on it. I've never worked with lace weight before and it's so delicate and ethereal.

I'm using Misti Alpaca in a blue-gray color and US4 needles. Here is my progress so far:

I'm new here! I just started this shawl and it is my first big lace project so it is slow going. I am just finished with the first run through of chart one. I am using Misti Alpaca on size 2 addi's. I've got a question about the pattern. I'm almost through the final full repeat of Chart 1 but I'm nervous I might not have enough yarn to finish the rest. I started off with 85g (900 yds) of yarn and now I have 47g left. I'm at the point where I can either stop now and call it the final half repeat of Chart 1 or continue on for another full repeat. Will Charts 2-4 take up more than half the yarn or will I be able to use all 85g to finish the pattern as written?

I'm sure it's obvious, but I'm on a bit of a lace knitting binge at the moment. I feel like lace knitting (and any small needle knitting, it it comes to that) is real value for money. Plus, I enjoy it. Most recently, I bought some yarn for the Icarus Shawl featured in the Summer 2006 issue of Interweave Knits. The pattern's by the most talented Miriam Felton. She's also selling copies of the pattern on her web site.

The yarn is Suri Elegance (in Cordovan) which I bought from Alpaca Yarn company (this is the yarn recommended in the pattern). It's beautifully soft, with a lovely, rich color. The thing that I'm most excited about in this shawl, though, is the curvilinear effect in the edging. It's not particularly obvious in the magazine pictures, and I'm not sure it will be obvious with this particular yarn (although I'll know it's there, which is really all that counts). It's pretty clear in some of Miriam's photos, though. I love it when something as simple as knitting produces something as striking as this.

why does it tease me so?

Just when I thought I had finished the first repeat of Chart 1, I find a mistake. Two mistakes. Three. And I Can't Fix It by laddering!!!

One of my new sets of increases only has 7. Another has the appropriate 8. But two others are stuck with 6 even after doing an extra row...

I am going to to have to frog back about 5 or 6 rows at least. *sigh*

Icarus -- nearly done with Chart 1.

I've been making lots of progress on my Icarus, & since I'm making it the size of a large scarf, I'm nearly done with Chart 1. In fact, I would be done with Chart 1 already, except that I was zipping along without the pattern in front of me & forgot that the final set of Chart 1 ends early. So I thought I was already done with Chart 1, but then when I went to check the pattern to start Chart 2, I realized that I would either need to frog back several rows, or knit a bit more before starting Chart 2. I decided I'd rather knit the 16 more rows instead of trying to frog back 8 rows. I'm pretty sure I'll have enough yarn for the extra rows without any trouble, since I've used less than half what I have of this yarn.

I expect to start Chart 2 this weekend, though, & I'm really looking forward to it.

Hola KALsters!

It's been many months since Icarus was published, and things have slowed down around here a bit, but there are new KALsters trickling in every week. So, keep posting! :)

I just got an email from Miriam Felton. She says:

I've got a couple bits of news that might be worth a post, but since I'm not part of the KAL, I can't post them. I have discovered some errors from my original intent on the 4th chart of the pattern and in the final border rows. I posted about it in this post. They're bolded, but they're in the modifications section of the FO specs.

Also, I will be offering the Icarus shawl as a stand-alone pattern shortly. I understand that it's getting more difficult to find copies of the magazine.

So I thought I'd bring Icarus along with us yesterday when we went to take DH/DP to his echocardiogram which is at a hospital 2 hrs away from us normally even with congestion. You can stop laughing now. We were driving through that there and back.

I had to wait until dawn before I could read the chart clearly enough to start knitting Icarus. As soon as it did get light enough for me to read it, I started to work while DH drove like a man possessed to keep us safe. We diverted south for a bit and took a secondary bridge over just to avoid the Port Mann cause it was backed up to at least 208 if not further east. We got him to Lions Gate just before 9am. His appointment was for 8am and normally, two hours is enough time for us to get there even if we have to divert around congestion. We had left at 6 am.

Then, when I go to drive off, I reach up to adjust the rear view mirror and the frelling thing breaks off. The glue failed!

So, here I am, driving around the North Shore, looking for the nearest dealership - which I never find - without a rear view, feeling oh-so-blind, with three kids in the back seats, praying I don't get hit because we had left our insurance papers for the van at home in Dh's other jacket.

I finally take the kids to Capilano Mall, drag out the wagon to pull DD around, stick D2 in my sling and spend the next half hour to hour praying I don't run over DS with the wagon because he's doing the "jump over the handle, slid under the handle" game in Walmart. I buy some yarn, grab some extra money, and then head to "go bananas" to wait for DH to show up.

Sometime after 11, he finally shows. He thinks they may have spotted something on his echo cause of the talk between the teacher and trainee.

Anyway, from there, I showed him the broken off mirror and DH rolls his eyes. We head from there to our doctor's office in Caulfield, buy a reprint of our insurance papers just-to-be-safe and I buy a replacement map for the van and we head to Horseshoebay to see if our friend is there cause his phone was dead and we wanted to hole up somewhere for a bit. I suggested a couple of alternative friends too, but noooo... the kids want to see that one. We drive past the line of cars trying to get on the 99 north and into HSB, right into our friend's parking lot and lo and behold, not only is the power out, so is our friend. His car is GONE.

So we head back east. As soon as we hit the highway, the radio says (love News1130!!!) to stay off the no 1 between Abbotsford and West Vancouver cause of fallen trees. Guess which highway we're on? Yup.

We stay on it, slipping into the HOV lane for the trip back, and at 176, we decide to take a secondary route. We see that our gas guage is getting low - I had suggested filling up or at least putting more in earlier. We had to divert along our diversion route twice because of blocked roads. I'm glad we had a map with us!

In Abbotsford, we fueled up and I made sure we had a full tank.

Took us easily four hours to get home. And I'm glad I got that reprint of our insurance just in case. It kept us from getting in an accident! Lights were out all over the place. Trees were done. There were several places where we saw instead of the highways crews removing the trees, they had just chainsawed off the worst of it to get the traffic moving again. We saw one car had been hit by a tree, several accidents, and even a consumer trailer tossed to the side like a toy. At least the small truck towing it hadn't flipped. There was also reports all over the place of more insanity and accidents. Places were flooded too.

So I knit there and knit back and pumped milk on the road for D2. DS fed her, the good boy. We were home shortly after 5pm. By 8pm, I was out cold cause I didn't get much sleep the night before either. To top it off, Icarus had driven me nuts cause I had made a mistake and couldn't figure out where I had done it. I had put it down because the drive back was too dark to knit following a graph and I couldn't see it either. At home, I had to frog back 4 sets of rows (knit and purl) to fix a mistake I had made! At least I was able to quickly do that once safe at home. DH said that my knitting was keeping me calm which had helped him keep calm for that trip back.

I think I'm going to make an emergency knitting kit for the car, just in case wew were to get stuck on a day like yesterday...

I've invented a cool trick to speed up knitting the SSK's on the spine section of Icarus. It's working quite well for me. For details, please see my blog. I knit Continental, & this trick may be helpful to other Continental knitters as well, so I thought I would share.

Well now...

My little reason for not doing icarus for the last (almost) 6 weeks is growing like a weed. Romana is cute, cuddly, and a mommy's girl. DH has an echocardiogram or something in the morning (its currently o dark early, or late) and I've found my iky and have put it on a set of straight needles (Clover woods) in order to work on it today. 3-4 hrs in the car and at least an hour of waiting around (hopefully with 3 tuckered out kids) and I should be able to get some knitting in, right? I have socks, a baby hat for a girlfriend based on a pattern I made, and icarus with me so I won't be bored. Romana's Ruffles is the name I gave the baby hat. I'm currently fighting mastitis and am on my second set of antibiotics. Until I'm off them, DH isn't wanting me to do much other than sit and nurse and maybe knit. At least he hasn't hidden my needles.

Time for me to try to get some sleep. Ha. right. Baby induced insomnia... Well, I do need some sleep...

I finally started Icarus yesterday. I have contemplated several yarns while thinking of doing this shawl, but ended up using a completely different from my birthday stash. I decided that a fingering weight mohair blend that my mother bought me is the perfect color for feathers. I'm making a smaller version of Icarus to use in place of a scarf with one of my winter coats.

So I'm going to use the extra post to say how much I am enjoying this pattern so far. Chart 1 is easy to learn, which makes it good take-along or KIP knitting. Yay!

I finally fnished my Icarus! I've posted pictures on my blog.
This took longer than almost any other lace shawl I've knit, I think. I began it back in July, but I got tired of all the Chart 1 repeats, so it got put aside for a little while.
In the end, I skipped the last repeat of Chart 1, because I thought I was going to run out of yarn. I used Misti Baby Alpaca, in black.
I'm really happy with the shawl the way it is, and it's still a good size, 77cm (30.5") down the centre back, and 155cm (62") across the wingspan.

Hi, everyone there. My Icarus has just taken off and it's doing well, I think. It is my first lace shawl and my first KAL as well. I am so envious of those who have their shawls finished! I expect to have mine for Christmas or so. I am using Rich Earth lace wool from handpaintedyarn. I began it on monday and, yesterday I did some more knitting after everyone had gone to sleep. I got so involved that when I realized it was 3:00 in the morning. I have been feeling very sleepy throughout the day. I might just go to bed now. G'd knit.

I have one and a half repeats of Chart 1 to go! I have been trying to do about one repeat of Chart 1 a week, with this project going along on the backburner. I hope to power through the other charts after doodling along for so long.

I'm Finished!

I used Handpaintedyarn.com Merino Lace yarn and size 4 needles. This was my first lace shawl and first go at lace blocking. I was impatient and put a fan on it full blast and had it dry in just a few hours.
Luckily the weather has just gotten cool enough to wear it. Yay!

Icarus on hold

I'm putting Icarus away for at least a month. I have a good reason...

She made her appearance on Friday at 1:35pm PST after two hours of labour. She was 8lbs 5oz and had all the required bits. We don't have a name yet. That'll come soon.

I'm recovering. Parts that are supposed to be sore still are. Others are getting used to being used again. Big Brother and Big Sister are adjusting. The grandpas have been passing out pink bubble gum cigars. :)

The Giant Icarus is finally finished! Previously, I wrestled with blocking it or leaving it unblocked. The beautiful feathers still appeared, but were not as defined as the other shown shawls. However, the yarn's texture encouraged no blocking. So I decided to hand wash the shawl and drape it with minimal shaping to dry. It was the perfect solution, and I have the photos to prove it!

I LUVLUVLUV how it turned out! Sorry, but I just cannot contain the excitement I had when I photographed the shawl on my favorite walking path. =:8

Hi everyone! My name is Becki and I'm just starting on Icarus. I finished Seraphim a couple of weeks ago and didn't really think I wanted to do any more shawl-knitting for a while...but then...the yarn I had earmarked to someday use for Icarus was just too pretty to wait.

It's Alpaca Cloud from Knitpicks, in the Iris color.

Also, on account of me being a Latin teacher, the name "Icarus" alone made this pattern irresistible! :-) My goal is to have Icarus finished by the time my AP Latin class starts reading "Daedalus & Icarus" this year. Should be a very manageable goal since we don't even start on Ovid till the spring semester! But hey, I can always use additional visual aids in class, right?

This is the first KAL I've joined, so I look forward to seeing everyone's progress and sharing my own. And now, I'll leave you with a parting picture of my progress so far:

Progress - graphs are okay..

I have the first Icarus graph as a photocopy beside me and I'm marking off lines as I do them. I'm now on chart 1, row 12 and I'm finding this cotton a dream to work with unlike the Alpaca I had. I only have the one chart copied at the moment and when I finish the first repeat, I'm going to get a second one and continue to do that in order to keep where I am straight. I got lost the first time through with the Alpaca and just about went nuts trying to figure out where I was, or wasn't. This way, I can destroy the graph, but keep my original pattern nice and locked away in my desk drawer. I've also enlarged the graph pattern so I won't need a magnifyer to read it.

I really should just concentrate on no-think-ums for the next while, but Icarus is bugging me. It wants to be made. So I'm going to work on it.

Restart?
Not enough yarn...

Here I am, just finished the third row of chart 3, and it is clear that there just isnt' going to be enough yarn. No way. I thought I had extra. It is some obscure German mohair I found at the LYS, and I bought all 11 skeins they had. But it surely won't even get me through chart 4, let alone the edging and bind off, so I am going to try to frog the whole thing.

Frog? Can I frog this hairy stuff? I'll be looking for comments on how I will ever do this!

But I still need my Icarus, so will be casting on with Alpaca Cloud. This time I know I'll have enough. (5 skeins). What needle size should I use? 3? 4? 5? No, not 5.

The mohair was something called Stahl sche Wolle Serenade. It really is beautiful, and I hope I can recover the yarn for another use. To be honest, though, the shawl was really turning out to be HUGE, so any of this I recover will probably go for scarves and hats. I love the yarn, and will morn the loss of my Icarus in this, whatever it is.

Icarus - restart?

I had put Icarus away because right now all I need for projects are no-think-ums. Baby hats, baby booties, a filet afghan that I also finished. The baby is due any time from now till 3 weeks from now.

My grandma who tried to teach me how to knit died this past month too, so no-think-ums were definately on the menu for knitting. And someone, I lost the pm telling me who, from Knitters' Review sent me a small care parcel of Jaeger Siena mercantized cotton. I have more than enough to make Icarus out of it instead of the alpaca that has been driving me batty. The card said to make my daughters matching sweaters, but I'd rather make something they could curl up in. The filet afghan finally got my Irish Diamond Shawl out of DD's hands, but she still uses it whenever she can.

So, I'm in the process of frogging Icarus so I can restart it for the umpteeth time in cotton. It is a beautiful pale purple/lavendar colour that I adore. And it should go faster too. But I won't really be concentrating on it until a few months after Bitty's born. Which means I'll be able to save the Alpaca for something feltable.

I am so giddy. Yarn. What a wonderful present!

Finished!!!

Icarus is finished and oh, so lovely. It turned out better than I ever dreamed. This is definitely the loveliest thing I have ever knit. And, of course, it has whetted my appetite to knit more lace. Thanks so much, Miriam, for the beautiful design.

So... with three and a half rows and the bind off left, I ran out of yarn. For those that are curious - 650 yards is NOT enough, even if you cut out one repeat, to knit this shawl. It may be possible on a 2 instead of a 3 needle, but I doubt it. (And your shawl would not be lacy.) I love it, but now.. I must wait. Wait for Wendy to finish her shawl (haha! I'll be waiting what? one day? two days?) and hope she has enough Alchemy left (and is still willing to part with it) so that I can finish mine. Because I will RIP THE WHOLE THING OUT before I order $27 worth of yarn (including shipping) for THREE FREAKIN' ROWS. (BTW, I know I should have known. But the insult still stings.)

This Icarus is a bit unusual compared to everyone else's shawls. Because its recipient will be (literally) climbing either Mt. Everest or a nearby mountain, I decided to use Catalina's Alpaca worsted weight with my aluminum Inox US9 circulars. When I ran out of yarn for the last 2 rows of Chart 4 and could not get another hank, I decided to use a different yarn (similar to the colorway) altogether. Here is the result of Rasha's Icarus. I enjoyed knitting this project, but must admit that if I had to knit it in laceweight instead of the light worsted, I would get bored with Chart 1. I loved how the BO looked, and will be incorporating that technique in other patterns. This shawl was already huge unblocked! Please note the DVD case included for scale. I had displayed it at the Boston Knit-out and Crochet Too! event this past Sunday.

Yarn (MC): 3 hanks of Catalina's Alpaca Worsted in NY55 colorway, 200m/100g
Yarn (CC): 1 hank of Berocco's Ultra Alpaca, 200m/100g
Needles: aluminum Inox US9 for Catalina, aluminum Inox US10.5 for Berocco
Time spent: just at 2 weeks
Notes: I did one repeat of Chart 1, but if I had not, only the 3 alpaca hanks were needed. My careful calculations hint that my heavier version of this shawl would be a good substitute to knit instead of a Clapotis for the same amount of yarn. I will be confirming this theory with either TC's New Tweed or Horstia's Silk/Wool yarns.

UPDATE .... I won first prize in the knitting section and managed to take out the supreme needlework item .. very nice suprise .
The judges were taken by the pattern and the drape of the shawl ... so from a very hpapy knitter ..Thank you Miriam for the beautiful pattern!!

Finished and unblocked .......boy did the binding off take a lot of wool . I used about 1 and 1/2- 2/3 of the 2nd handpainted yarn skein Blocked and beautiful .. so nice that I ''ve entered her in our local show (a little ol' dear with her crochet needle and 12 ply will beat me , but who cares ..I just want the world to admire her !)
I enjoyed this KAL and it gave me the 'ummph' to keep going and not abandon the knitting ..so thanks to you all .
After the weekend I'll post a proper picture .

I am new to the KAL and I say hello to everyone!!

I casted-on last week, and after many loving things said to my lifeline, I am back on track and about halfway through Chart 1. Hopefully, I will be able to get Chart 1 done tonight and start my repeats.

I am using Lorna's Laces Helen's Lace in Periwinkle on #6 needles. I am glad that I swatched b/c mine would have been quite small if I would have done it on #3 needles. Hope everyone had a good weekend!

I've only got 6 rows in chart 3 and chart 4 left to go. I have to admit, I'm getting tired of it! I cut out a repeat in chart 1, since I only had two hanks of the haiku, but I think I will be okay in terms of yarn. If not, Wendy agreed to let me have her leftovers from her Wings of the Moth shawl (since her colors are featured in my colorway as well.) let's hope I'm okay, I saw that the harlot needed almost 3!

This is a very special post.

This is the 200th post! Wow. This KAL really took flight. You all have been really great. Some are attempting their first lace (still love that buttton, Kate), others are seasoned knitters who saw something special in Miriam's pattern. It's been lovely to see how supportive this little community has been. I thank you for that.

And we're still adding new members almost every week (usually more often than that)! (and apologies to those who send me an email and don't hear back for several days - I seem to fall chronically behind. No worries though, you're not forgotten.) Even if you've finished your Icarus Shawl, I encourage you to check back in from time to time and see the progress of the other KALsters.

Spent the weekend knitting 10 rows and then frogging 10 rows. Does anyone put their lifelines every 5 rows or so or maybe every other row, or is that totally insane? No one told me how %^$* hard it is to fix lace.

Can I ask a not-icarus question of the bloggers on this knit along?

Any suggestions for an easy, possibly online, pattern for a poncho for a little girl? I'm going to use Malabrigo in this crazy pink. Looked really bright to me, but the lady at the yarn store in St. Paul assured me that it was right for a little girl.

I should be in tears but I saw this coming.
I frogged my my swatch just before the center stitch and tied it on. But that wasn't enough.

Yarn: KnitPicks 100% wool, laceweight, dyed with Mandarin Orange and Pink Lemonade Koolaid at various dilutions, 850 yds.

Needle: size 4 24" Inox circular

Size before blocking: 49" wide by 28" long

After blocking: 59" wide by 39" long

Done! Dropping it off at the yoga studio one day before the auction and benefit.

This was a nice project to participate in - hope to see you at another knit along sometime.
